A wild live mix: Fryars, JLYY and F.U.R.S.

As part of our “Free Gig Thursday” night out, a colleague and I decided to hit Rough Trade East to hear Fryars. A part from the weird yet fun location (try listening to live music while browsing tons of cool cds and vinyls!) that already made us feel cool enough, Fryars was quite nice. The guy with sunglasses (ok, i get it, you’re a singer. But hey! it’s rather dark in here!), aka Benjamin Garrett, sang songs from the new album “Power” and a few songs from his past repertoire (he’s been around for a while!). Really really good. Unfortunately it was a really short event.
Best stuff: “Cool like me” (of which you can find the video here), “The Power” and “Prettiest ones fly highest”.

Come parte della nostra seratona  “Concerti Gratis del Giovedì”, io e una collega abbiamo deciso di provare il Rough Trade East (un negozio di dischi nel East London) per ascoltare i Fryars. A parte la location bizzarra ma divertente (provate ad ascoltare musica dal vivo mentre frugate tra ogni sorta di cd e vinili!) che già ci ha fatto sentire delle fiere, Fryars è stato molto bello. Questo tizio con gli occhiali da sole (ok, capisco, sei un cantante. Ma è buio qui!), all’anagrafe Benjamin Garrett, ha cantato canzoni dal suo ultimo album “Power” e alcune canzoni dal suo repertorio passato (è nella music business da un bel pò!). Molto molto bravo, benchè decisamente breve.
Roba migliore: “Cool like me” (di cui potete trovare il video qui sotto), “The Power” e “Prettiest ones fly highest”.

Once his quick gig was over, we decided the night was young and moved on to the Old Blue Last pub, where live music is always on (as we have seen in the past with Tove Styrke). We got there just in time for the start of JLYY. Basically what they do is all about experimenting and mixing various rock influences. Loved it! The result is something like “alternative Kings of Leon meet a pissed off percussionist”. You want to keep “Man in the wind” in your collections, it’s really good. For the rest, I can only find “Peto” and “Glass Drum” online.

Una volta finita questa breve performance, abbiamo deciso che la notte era giovane e ci siamo spostate verso l’Old Blue Last, dove c’è sempre qualche evento dal vivo (come abbiamo visto in passato con Tove Styrke). Siam arrivate giusto in tempo per l’inizio di JLYY. Sostanzialmente quello che fanno si basa sulla sperimentazione e l’incrocio di varie influenze rock. Fantastici! Il risultato è qualcosa di simile a “la versione alternativa dei Kings of Leon che incontra un batterista incazzato”. Da avere nelle proprie collezioni “Man in the wind”, davvero bella bella. Per il resto, riesco solo a trovare “Peto” e “Glass Drum” su internet.

Last but not least on stage, the F.U.R.S. This band is composed of two girls and two boys, and the impression is that of a sort of indie-pop retro groove. They’ve been around since 2012, and will produce their first album in 2015. From what I happened to find on the web, they started with some great songs that got quite good reviews, such as “Striptease” and “Prove it”, although they seem impossible to find online at the moment. What I happened to hear and enjoy is “Just Kids” and “An eye on the vicious”. There you go.

Ultimo ma non per importanza, sul palco sono saliti i F.U.R.S. Questa band è composta da due ragazze e due ragazzi (di cui due fratelli), e l’impressione che si ha è di una sorta di groove indie-pop con un tocco retrò. Sono in giro dal 2012, e produrranno il loro primo album nel 2015. A quanto leggo su internet hanno iniziato con il botto producendo due canzoni, “Striptease” e “Prove it”, molto stimate dalla critica, ma al momento introvabili online. Noi abbiamo sentito “Just Kids” e “An eye on the vicious” e ci sono piaciute.
